400-page book on Civil War historical markers and monuments in 24 southwest Missouri counties—Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Douglas, Greene, Hickory, Howell, Jasper, Laclede, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Ozark, Polk, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, Texas, Vernon, Webster, and Wright. This guide book includes 187 historical markers and monuments—both Union and Confederate—and over 250 photographs, background information on the major battles in southwest Missouri, interesting facts about many of the monuments, and an every-name, every-place index. This book will be a must for any history or Civil War enthusiast. It will be a valuable guide during the Civil War Sesquicentennial (2011-2015) as tourists flock to Civil War sites.
Read a portion of the book’s foreword below:
Thanks to the Phelps Tent, Daughters of Union Veterans, all those interested in the Civil War and local history can go "into the field" with this authoritative and well-researched guide and be able to easily locate the dozens of significant historical markers, gravesites and memorials that dot the region.
It is my hope that as we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, students of the conflict will seek out the sites listed in this guide, pause a moment at each one, and consider how this important event profoundly changed our state and our nation.
