Fort Sand Springs  Civil War Historical Marker

DURING THE CIVIL WAR (1861 - 1864). A STOCKADE AND FORTIFICATION WAS ESTABLISHED AT SAND SPRINGS, MISSOURI. A TOWN WHICH WAS NAMED FOR THE CLEAR WATER BUBBLING UP THROUGH THE SAND. IT WAS ALSO A CAMPING PLACE FOR WAGON CARAVANS TRAVELING THE WIRE ROAD FROM ST. LOUIS. THE FORT WAS BUILT OF HEAVY OAK BOARDS DRIVEN INTO THE GROUND.  IT WAS MANNED BY THE 74TH REGIMENT ENROLLED MISSOURI MILITIA (AND A UNIT FROM ILLINOIS) THROUGHOUT THE WAR. IT WAS AN IMPORTANT FEDERAL "SATELLITE" OUTPOST AND LOCALLY - RECRUITED UNITS USED IT AS A BASE OF OPERATIONS FOR UNION FORAYS INTO THE REGION.

 

 

CONFEDERATE GENERAL JOHN S. MARMADUKE'S EXPEDITION INTO MISSOURI RESULTED IN A SKIRMISH AND THE BURNING OF THIS FEDERAL FORT AT SAND SPRINGS UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN JAMES C. HERD. CONFEDERATE COLONEL JOSEPH O. SHELBY'S FORCE MOVED EAST WITH A BRIGADE ON THE ROLLA ROAD FROM SPRINGFIELD ON FRIDAY JANUARY 9, 1863, AND ENTERED THE TOWN ABOUT 7:00 P.M. THEY APPROPRIATED "EVERYTHING WHICH COULD BE FOUND" THEN CAMPED FOR THE NIGHT. HIS ESCORT AND LIEUTENANT F.M. SCOTT THEN "FIRED" (BURNED) THE FEDERAL FORT, SCATTERING THE SMALL UNION FORCE. COLONEL SHELBY THEN JOINED FORCES, NEAR MARSHFIELD, WITH COLONEL J.C. PORTER AND COLONEL EMMETT MACDONALD AND "PUSHED" ON TO HARTVILLE, MISSOURI.
