Projects of Mary Whitney Phelps Tent No. 22

Habitat for Humanity

In 2003, our tent pledged to provide a U.S. porch flag kit to every new Habitat for Humanity homeowner. The Tent has provided several dozen flag kits since then. One of our members attends the dedication of the new home and presents the flag kit during the ceremony.

Adopt-a-Veteran project

Each year, the tent adopts two or three veterans in the Adopt-a-Veteran project at Mt. Vernon Veterans Home. Our Tent members contribute cash, which is used to buy items from the veterans’ wish lists.

Patriotic Instruction

Tent No. 22 has a team of members who go into local schools for the purpose of instructing students on proper respect for the U.S. Flag, history of the flag, history of our national anthem, the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance, and how to conduct oneself during the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of our national anthem. Each student receives a 4” x 6” flag and a handout to take home to share with family. Tent Musician Rosemary Bane leads the students in the singing of patriotic songs. Team members include Rosemary Bane, Sally Bueno, Jody Clifton, Sally McAlear, Margaret Maulin, and Fran Black.

Luminary Tour at Wilson’s Creek

Each year, members of our Tent turn out to place luminaries along the five-mile tour road to honor those 2,539 soldiers of the North and South, who were casualties of the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. The Luminary Driving Tour is in December and the historic Ray house is decorated in Civil War period Christmas décor.

Department of Missouri Veterans Project

Our tent saves Best Choice UPC labels, which are redeemed for cash. The cash is then donated to one of the seven Veterans Homes in Missouri on a rotating basis.
